OVERVIEW

As part of Horizon Therapeutics’ broader UX modernization effort, I led a full research and redesign initiative focused on improving the mobile navigation experience for their corporate site.

The goal was to simplify how patients, healthcare professionals, and investors accessed critical information—while ensuring global consistency across markets.

01

CHALLENGE

The existing mobile experience was confusing, crowded, and outdated, especially for patients and healthcare professionals who need quick access to information.

The mobile menu had a see-through background, too many options, and wasted screen space, making navigation cluttered and inefficient.

We needed to restructure the information architecture, modernize interaction patterns, and define scalable design logic grounded in research and best practice trends.

02

GOAL

To make essential information easier to find, read, and trust across all global markets. In the previous navigation, the semi-opaque background often reduced text contrast, making labels difficult to read—especially on busy imagery.

The redesign aimed to establish a more intuitive, accessible pattern aligned with Horizon’s digital design system while improving usability at scale.

PROCESS

To define an informed strategy, I conducted a competitive audit of 40 websites — 20 pharmaceutical and 20 from adjacent industries (SaaS, finance, and healthcare).

Each was analyzed for:

  • Navigation architecture and interaction patterns

  • Search icon placement and discoverability

  • Global icon behavior and hierarchy

  • Menu treatment, transitions, and accessibility

04

KEY FINDINGS (Trend Stats)

  • 80% used a next-page treatment for cleaner hierarchy

  • 78% positioned the menu icon on the right

  • 65% surfaced the search bar in the header

  • 85% placed the close icon consistently at the top

These findings informed a scalable mobile navigation model emphasizing clarity, discoverability, and global consistency.

05

RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Use next-screen treatment to reduce cognitive load.

  2. Relocate search inside the expanded menu for cleaner hierarchy.

  3. Move social icons to the footer for consistency.

  4. Keep the global selector static across markets for orientation.

06

IMPLEMENTATION

Collaborated with developers to refine and prototype the new structure, ensuring consistent sizing, spacing, and accessibility alignment with Horizon’s global design system.

07

OUTCOME

The redesigned mobile experience improved usability and reduced interaction friction.

By simplifying navigation, users could reach key programs—like patient resources and research data—in just two taps. Internal testing showed higher task completion and stronger engagement across priority sections.

The model also established a scalable navigation logic that could evolve with future site features and localization.

REFLECTION

This project demonstrated how data-backed design can unify complex ecosystems and define what “intuitive” means at scale.

It reinforced that research doesn’t just support design—it shapes decisions that make enterprise systems feel effortless, human, and cohesive.

09

FUTURE STATE

While a global rollout of the redesigned framework was planned, full validation is no longer possible.

In October 2023, Amgen completed its acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics, and the original Horizon site was absorbed into Amgen’s digital ecosystem.

Although the live instance no longer exists, the research, prototypes, and interaction logic remain documented—ready for adaptation within the unified Amgen brand experience.

Work completed under Horizon Therapeutics Digital Experience team prior to Amgen integration.
